So I went to Hobby Lobby for the first time and it blew my mind! I could spend all my money there for sure! There were just so many great things for crafts and decorations. I'll need to go back soon. I limited myself to material, thread, and some Easter stuff...
And here's how you make a bubble skirt! It's similar to the tutorial at Tales of a Trophy Wife, I just changed a few small things.
What you need:
1/2 yard to 1 yard fabric
Matching thread
Elastic Waistband (1/2 inch or 3/4/ inch)
Sewing Equipment (pins, sewing machine, safety pins, rotary cutter, cutting mat, etc.)
And here's how!
1. First you'll need to cut the material for your skirt.
Age - length/waist
0-3 months - 12 in/14 in
3-6 months - 14 in/15 in
6-9 month - 16 in/16 in
12 month - 18 in/17 in
18 month - 20 in/18 in
2T - 22 in/18 and 3/4 in
3T - 24 in/19 and 1/2 in
4T - 26 in/21 in
You need to double the waistband. The two skirts I made were for 0-3 months and 18 months so I had a 12 x 28 piece and 20 x 36 piece of fabric.
2. Now that you have your fabric ready to go, you want to fold the longer side of the fabric down 1 inch and pin.
3. Then fold the fabric over 1 more inch and pin. Then iron your folds so they have a nice crease.
4. Now unfold the fabric and fold it in half (hamburger style ;-) )so that the front of the fabric is touching on the inside. Pin down the side to sew, but as you do so, mark where the second inch crease is. You're NOT going to sew here! This is where the elastic is going to go later.
5. Once your hem is sewn, fold the bottom of the skirt up to the second crease that you made with your iron and pin.
6. Then fold down the top at the first inch crease and then again at the second inch crease so that now your fabric is overlapping. Pin this to sew all the way around the skirt. You'll want to sew as close to the bottom of the crease as you can because the elastic will go through here.
7. Now at one part of the skirt, you should have a small hole where we didn't sew. This is where the elastic goes! Cut the elastic to the desired length mentioned in step 1. Take a safety pin and pin one side of the elastic and then the other side. This is to guide the elastic through the skirt and so you don't lose it in the material. Push the elastic through the waistband so you now have both ends coming out the back. Sew the elastic together.
And here are my two skirts I made for my matching girls this summer!
And here's the Bammer modeling.
