Stars and Stripes Decor

So I decided that I needed some patriotic decor in our apartment since we don't have any.  And now I have a fireplace so I can put things on the mantle without my daughter trying to grab it!  Blessings!  I wanted to make something simple with stars and stripes and this is what I came up with.

I bought 3 super cheap frames from Michael's that were different sizes.  I then grabbed some navy blue, red, white, and gold fabric that I already had - love my fabric scrap piles!

Stars:
I took some cardstock and cut out a star.  Then I painted it white and stamped it on the navy blue fabric randomly.  Let it dry and done!

Stripes:
For the stripes I took my white fabric and cut it down to fit in the frame.  I then cut red strips to lay across the white.  I liked that the edges were uneven and cut a little haphazardly so it looked more rustic.  I then used spray adhesive to attach the red stripes to the white.

Ampersand (&):
I saw a transfer tutorial on Turtles and Tails and really wanted to give it a try!  Especially since I don't have a Silhouette machine, I thought this would be something close.  So I printed a backwards ampersand (which took me forever to try to figure out!  I finally flipped the text on MS paint.  I'm sure there's an easier way, but I still need to figure that out...)  Then I printed it on wax paper which I had used adhesive spray to attach it to a plain piece of computer paper.  Then I dampened the fabric and dampened the paper and voila!  A transfer!  I was so excited that it worked!  (For a better tutorial, head to Turtles and Tails).

And here it is on my mantle next to our Discovering Salt Lake "Bucket List."

And if you haven't gone over to Two Yellow Birds Decor to vote for my 4th of July Skirt in the top 12, I would love for you to do that!  Voting ends Thursday at Midnight!

  1. This is such a great idea. I love the way you connected the two with the framed &. Thanks so much for sharing at Whimsy Wednesdays.
